Barrow Praises Announcement on Port of Savannah PDF Print

July 19, 2012

U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12), along with the rest of the Georgia delegation, today praised the Administration's decision to expedite federal review of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). Since joining Congress, Congressman Barrow has been active in securing funds to modernize and expand the port.

"This is great news, not just for Georgia, but for the entire country," said Congressman Barrow. "We're glad the Administration is acknowledging the critical role the Savannah Port plays in our national economy. Deepening the Savannah River will bring good-paying jobs to our region, and will have a positive economic impact for folks all across Georgia and throughout the country. I look forward to getting this project completed as soon as possible."

The project for the Port of Savannah involves deepening the Savannah River from its current 42 foot depth to as much as 48 feet. The project was authorized in the Water Resources and Development Act of 1999, and the delegation has worked to secure funding over the years for completion. The current review is to be completed by November 2012.
