GLASCOCK COUNTY

Glascock County was created in 1857, the one hundred twentieth to be designated and the third smallest county in the state.  Glascock County was taken from Warren County and was originally in the territory designated as Richmond County in 1777.

It was named for General Thomas Glascock who won his rank in the War of 1812 and the Seminole War.  He was Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and a member of Congress from 1835 to 1839.  The county seat, Gibson, was named for Judge William Gibson who donated $500 toward the construction of the courthouse.
